Living in Cyprus : Preparing Yourself

by Mark Dale

For many people the thought of moving abroad is just a distant dream. However, for some that dream could turn into a reality and one place which is particularly popular with people all around the world is Cyprus. Living in Cyprus in something that should be seriously considered.

Why Choose a Life in Cyprus?

Cyprus has some of the best picture postcard scenery you’ll ever see, from its mountains to the wonderful sea and beaches. Cyprus is also well known for its wonderful warm and friendly locals with a climate to match, being an all year round sun destination.

If you are looking for a place that ticks every box then Cyprus is perfect.

Things you should do before moving to Cyprus

If you are planning on moving to Cyprus then there are some things that you should ideally know. Doing a good amount of research is definitely advised beforehand too. That may sound obvious but unfortunately a lot of the time many people do not do the adequate amount of research and they find out far too late that they were not fully prepared for living in Cyprus.

What are the main things you should research? Here are the top things I think you should consider:

- Get a shortlist of areas that seem to meet your needs and visit them. Take time to explore them. - Consider your family and their ages as this will determine your property requirements and location. - Set a budget and make sure you allow for the unexpected. - You will also need to find out about the laws on starting a new life in Cyprus.

Obviously an excellent knowledge of the area(s) you are planning to move to is absolutely essential. When you visit, speak to the locals and try and meet people who have already made a permanent move to Cyprus. They will be able to advise you on both the good and bad aspects of life in Cyprus.

There is no better way to get to know about what you are letting yourself in for than talking to the locals in the area.

If you have kids then they will take priority over where you can live. Depending on their age, schools, a nursery, child minders, and other facilities for children will be essential to a happy life in Cyprus. For example, you wouldn’t want to buy a house in the Cyprus mountains if you need to drive for an hour to take the kids to school.

You need to understand the legal system and property laws before you start signing for anything. You must get a good lawyer well before you start your property hunt. If you can, get a recommendation of a good lawyer when you make your first visit.

Problems often arise when buying property in any country and Cyprus is no different. Anything from building delays to sellers pulling out of deal can make things stressful and costly. Always be prepared for problems and ensure you have budgeted for anything major going wrong. The laws are different in Cyprus so don’t assume anything.

Overall moving to Cyprus should be a great experience as you take measures to ensure that you learn the facts about your chosen Cyprus location before you actually set off. If you don’t then you could end up losing a lot of cash and missing out on the property of your dreams.
