Western Isles Bed And Breakfast And Stornoway Hotels

by Francis MacDonald

The Western Isles are a group of islands which are found out in the Atlantic ocean off the west coast of Scotland. Rather strangely the Western Isles are also widely known as the Outer Hebrides. There are over 200 islands in the group but only a handful are populated with many becoming deserted in the last century. The main island is the Isle of Lewis to the north where you will find the regions main town and administrative center, Stornoway.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland was one of the busiest herring fishing ports in Europe. During the herring season the town’s population trebled with thousands of fishermen and ancillary workers traveling to Stornoway to work. Sadly the trade collapsed following the First World War but Stornoway still has a small fishing fleet which adds character to the town. Stornoway is one of the best places in which to stay when visiting the Western Isles and below you will find a little information about the bed and breakfast accommodation available.

The Caberfeidh Hotel can be found on the outskirts of Stornoway set back off the road in its own well kept gardens. If you like trees there are a few mature examples in the hotels gardens but opposite can be found the astounding wooded Lews Castle grounds that are well worth exploring.

The Royal Hotel is the town’s most historic hotel having first opened in 1850. Looking lovely from the outside the hotel has some period features in its luxurious rooms. The hotels HS1 cafe bar and Boatshed restaurant offer superb cuisine and prove very popular with locals and visitors alike.

The Caladh Inn is Steornabhagh’s most substantial hotel with the most rooms. The Caladh Inn is found just on the outskirts of the town on the road that heads out to the airport. The Caladh Inn is extremely popular with both businessmen and tourists who appreciate the superb hospitality and central location.

Holm View Guest House is found about 15 minutes away from the center of Stornoway. This 4 star guest house offers some of the finest bed and breakfast in Stornoway and has an excellent reputation with numerous extremely positive reviews. As well as the guest house, bed and breakfast is also available in their luxurious Holm View Cottage.

Right in the very heart of Stornoway’s town center can be found the 3 star Thorlee Guest House. The Thorlee is one of the most popular guest houses in Stornoway due to it’s central location and it highly affordable accommodation.

Wherever you decide to stay in Stornoway you can be certain that you will experience some of the finest hospitality in the Western Isles (and maybe even the whole of Scotland). All of the accommodation mentioned in this article can be booked online very easily. It is always advisable to book your accommodation well in advance of your trip as it is very common for places in Stornoway to be fully booked at certain times of the year.
